Breaking the Glamour: Behind the Outfit Pics

I'm a BIG fan of showcasing how un-glamorous style blogging can be, as well as poking fun of myself any chance I get.  (See: "Hey, can you take a quick outfit pic?"-Awkward Tales of Fashion Blogging and A Fashion Blogger's Best Friends: Sunglasses). Blogging and social media at large are wonderful entities, but they're also a little dangerous in that they promote ideals that nobody can live up to--even if the poster doesn't mean to do that!  This time around I'm telling some behind the scenes stories about how I was all dressed up...and things weren't really "ideal" or even true to life!  Enjoy!

Fact: I changed out of my heels and into flip flops right after this was taken.  I often really do wear heels, but this day was not my day...

Possibly the most windy day I've EVER tried to take pictures.  I'm shocked I even got this snap!!!
I look alone, but if I had a nickel for every person that was staring at this "weirdo" twirling in a petticoat in the park in front of a tripod...I'd be a rich woman!
My front seat passenger stayed in the car and took this through a window.  I was excited about this new skirt, but it was raining and we didn't want to get him or the camera wet!
This is obviously not a high level photograph quality wise, but I liked this styling of this outfit and it was flash flooding before dinner.  So a nighttime quickie snap was more or less the only option!
I was T minus 5 minutes from being poured on and a HUGE storm broke out immediately from there!
This is a little more glamorous than some of the others, but the ONLY reason why I even got this shot was because someone I was supposed to pick up en route to a birthday party was running late.  Happy accident, otherwise I would have lost the lighting!  Plus, my bra is reflecting through my shirt due to the flash so there's that too...#glamourshattered
Rain drops were already coming down here...
I was so over this in this whole photoshoot.  I usually take pictures a few days to weeks ahead so I'm not stressed, but this had to go out promptly.  I was losing light, my hair was a mess, my equipment wasn't fulling behaving, and it was one of the first truly cold days of the fall and my nerves weren't used to it.  I would have been anywhere else but here during this shoot!!
Sometimes it looks colder than it is in my pictures, but this was not the case.  It was 10 degrees here and began snowing two hours later.  I feel like it was one of my most interesting and beautiful shoots ever, so it was worth it, but yes...it was cold!!
This was also chilly and it was first thing in the morning.  Double whammy!  I think kids were getting on a school bus just out of the camera's lens...
I'm literally behind some warehouse that I could not find again if I tried!  Lighting was an issue this day and I drove around looking for anything that wasn't too dark or too overexposed and somehow ended up here.  It was actually kind of sketch...
The last shot of my shoot before my camera's battery died.  I got about 6 photos before this and just had to make due with what I got!
See my right hand floating gracefully?  It's totally sprained!  I was taking photos for the next week and was both hoping it'd be better by then and didn't want the brace in more photos than it had to be.  I was whimpering a lot between pictures...
No matter how stylized and chic any photos that style/fashion bloggers put out, we ALL have stories like some of the ones I shared.  So whether you're a blogger just starting out or a fan of reading fashion blogs, keep all of this in mind as life will never treat anyone perfect and we all have days where the elements are literally against us!  Bloggers...have any best of stories involving YOUR behind the scenes hiccups?

  4. Loving all your honesty!!! I know the struggle when it comes to photos... living in Chicago there are the temperature extremes too cold (very difficult to work with!!) or snowy, or too hot (easier to work with, but uncomfortable!)... plus there's the unexpected (rain, etc) and whatever else we can think of, right!? Haha!

  8. Haha omg yes! All of your photos above look fantastic, but its the story of what was going on behind the scenes that takes us back to reality. My one pet peeve is all the weird stares I get and "what are you doing?" when I'm out shooting since I have the tripod and am doing it myself. All of the things you mentioned above have happened to me too. Cold weather where you feel like you're going to freeze to death. Ive been in heels in the snow and my feet would feel like icicles. Lighting can be an issue depending on the time of day. Finding the perfect spot for a shoot location. Extremely windy days where your hair goes all over the place or your outfit won't stay down. Lugging around a heavy tripod and camera to get to a location. So many fun times haha.

  13. Ooooh I loved reading these stories! Haha. This post was a wonderful idea! And all of your photos look great - you can't tell any of these things were going on behind the scenes! I really loved the story behind your umbrella outfit. :) My worst behind the scenes usually happen anytime I attempt to capture a twirling photo...those just never work and people think I'm insane when they walk by lol.

    I hope you're having a great week! :)

  17. Love this post! It is so true!! Taking photos is rarely as glamorous as it looks. I usually feel awkward, and changing in the back of the car which turns into a disaster, and fighting the wind.

  18. I love this post, Lauren, I could seriously relate to everything you've mentioned here! Nearly every time I'm ready to take photos, the wind will start up. It will be 105 degrees and humid and all of a sudden it's super windy, seriously!? I can't even count how many times in the winter I've had to ditch the coat (because it didn't work well with my outfit) and have the heat blasting in the car, so I can run back and forth in between shots, haha. I also can't even begin to describe how awkward it is when people stop to watch you take your photos! I've had people take out their phones and try to take pics or videos of me, so rude! You looked gorgeous in all of these photos and what's funny is that you wouldn't even know all of what took place by looking at them; your fascial expressions don't show anything negative going on! Goes to show that we can't look at someone's life through photos and think they've got everything together, pics never reveal the whole story! Thanks so much for sharing, beautiful, and I hope you're having a great week so far!

  20. Yes I agree what people see in photos and what actually is happening is two different things! I like that one photo where you said your passenger was in the car taking photos out of the window. What a great idea! Never thought of that! Well you do look great in all the photos regardless of the situation!

  26. This post is fabularious!! (not sure if that works as a neologism?)

I've actually started keeping especially ridiculous outtakes from photoshoots in a folder on my computer. They mostly involve weird facial expressions and/or inopportune gusts of wind.

  27. Oh my word, how I was nodding my head off throughout this whole wildly relateable post! Especially when you touched on how the weather is often colder than it looked in snaps. I once did a shoot in December at night. while it was snowing and a few degrees below zero, in a sleeveless halter dress and kept a smile on my face the whole time (and thankfully did not get frostbite or hypothermia). The things we do - and admittedly, often secretly enjoy - in the name of fashion (and great snaps!).

  36. This was so fun to read! It's always nice sharing the stories behind the photos as you can easily make a photo look perfect when the reality is anything but, haha! It's why I always share a little about what I was up to for the day when I was wearing my outfits - as some days the outfit looks better than the day was, and other days a bad day is cheered up perfectly by a great outfit :)

  43. This was so good! I love how honest you are about the stories behind the shots. I think we all have stories like that. Even if you're not a blogger you probably edit and position things in pics for social media that are far from realistic. The captions don't always tell the full story and you need to be reminded from time to time what is real.

  50. This is one of my favourite posts! It's so important for people to see and hear this stuff, a photo can look perfect but that doesn't mean it really is. Gosh damn lighting gets me every time XD It use to take me sometimes a whole hour or 2 to get a decent photo due to where the window was in my old bedroom causing a blurr with 2 protein containers stacked at the right height... even broke my camera once cause it fell off XD xoxo
