Screaming Skull

About the outfit!
Believe it or not, I don't always wear skirts or dresses!  (Sounds like an early April Fools day joke, no?)  I actually quite like shorts and pants, especially if they have fun colors or prints on them.  Spring is when I hang up the dresses and such more often than any other season.  When it's slightly chilly, it's also kind of windy here, making it feel colder.  I go into "give-up mode" on these chilly days as it's just after winter and put on pants.  And on the warmer windy days? No matter what I do, I'm just not as sexy as Marilyn Monroe when the wind blows up my skirt.  I have the grace and sex appeal of a girl with head gear who is wearing a dress for the first time in her life whenever that happens.  It's just easier for my life and self esteem to reach for the shorts!

Style Details
This is a brand new pair of shorts from Old Navy.  I usually only shop there for basics but once in a while a staple piece grabs my attention.  I love how abstract and geometric these shorts are, and the fit is amazing (size 2 for reference).  Because we're in that "it's not quite winter or spring temperature" wise part of the year, I paired it with a Banana Republic sweater.  A pink and demure sweater with a skull on it?  Yes please!  I'm still newer to brooch world, and I'm unclear if adding a brooch to this outfit was a good move or bad.  With the skull in the center it's a bit distracting to have the Deer Arrow sewing machine brooch just hanging out on my clavicle bone.  Although brooch or no brooch, I do stand by pairing a sewing machine with a skull anytime, because...always keep them guessing!  My sunglasses are also Old Navy and my shoes are Steve Madden.

Positivity & Motivational:
The most bitter people I know are disappointed that they've done so much for various people, but those people did not reciprocate.  I'm not saying that can't be heartbreaking (it is), but I think we need to remind ourselves that life isn't always fair.  If you're going to do something nice for someone, do it because you believe in the action or gesture, and not because they'll for sure have your back in the future.  Life is full of disappointments, but expecting people to behave in various ways is a disappointment you have control over conquering.

Musical Inspiration!
Another Sonic Youth based blog post title!  "Screaming Skull" is off one my favorite albums, both of theirs and in general, Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.  I talk about Sonic Youth a lot.  They're basically my favorite.  Arguably the "most famous" indie band of all-time, so many people still don't even know their catalog.  Most people consider Goo to be the most accessible album they have, and therefore a good starting off point if you're ever curious about them.  Other's argue Day Dream Nation, probably because it's the most famous and makes lists boasting the best albums of all-time lists frequently.  I don't disagree with either suggestion.  But I go a little rogue when I suggest Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star when I tell people it could be a good beginner's Sonic Youth album.  The album has been at the top and bottom of lists all over the place, but the grit of it's sound is exactly what I think of when I think of Sonic Youth.  In suggesting in, I feel I'm telling people that they'll know what they're in for.  Regardless, here's the song that this blog post was named for:
I've recently added two pages to this blog, one that catalogues posts named after songs and another that catalogues all of the concert stories.  Click the links on to see for yourself!  Happy Friday!

  22. I love the simplicity of the outfit. Everything is just perfect. You look cute as a button, Lauren. Happy Friday.

  23. Love that skull and the print! I love a good print on my shorts and I always like to wear shorts with a bright color or a fun print in the warmer months. Also - I agree that you can't expect anyone to do anything. Instead have just accept it as a lovely surprise when it does happen but don't do something solely because you expect someone to do the same. You will be disappointed.

  24. Hold on, what?! You're in a pair of shorts?! Now dang girl, you trying to prank us, aren't ya? LOL! But you should really wear more shorts, Lauren! I mean look at those killer legs!

  39. Such a cute look! Love the pattern and colors on those shorts and the pin on the top is the perfect touch!

  40. Love this pattern from Old Navy - its perfect for shorts!! I love shorts paired with a long sleeved top/thin sweater!

  41. I love this look on you! It's such a fresh style from what we are used to seeing. And you're so right about the bitterness. I have trouble sometimes with this because when people seem to let you down, you inherently think it's your fault. It's time to quit the blame game whether it's on someone else or yourself.

    xx Yasmin

  42. Wow, I must say I'm surprised to hear about your love of shorts/pants, because I feel like many dress-lovers love dresses because they're NOT pants, hehe. I'm ok with pants, but shorts aren't often comfortable because they do that weird digging-into-my-leg-when-I-sit thing. That said, these look SUPER cute on you, and I love the sweater you've paired them with! That shade of blush is so gorgeous, but the skull keeps the sassy vibe! Adorbs!

  43. Nice design shorts, I love the printed design of old navy shorts. Full sleeve t-shirt with shorts looking good on you.

Hey, all!  I'm a big baseball fan and my mom is from Chicago so I grew up hearing about the Cubs history and am pretty amped to be here at game 7!  Anyone else into this year's World Series or have a fan favorite they're rooting for?
Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post showing my fandom!  I decided to be silly and wear my Cubs tee with a skirt (same as my zombie skirt) from Retrolicious via ModCloth with bears all over them...get it?  Hehe. I'm not into totally normal sports attire, as I exhibited HERE. Stay safe tonight if you're out watching tonight!

Ocean Front Members Only

Is this a style post only I could bring you or what?  Not only did I mix prints (three times, as the Forever 21 shirt is gingham, the ModCloth briefcase is dinosaur printed, and my true vintage skirt is an ocean front border print!) but I'm mixing vintage with modern fashion.  It seems that many vintage-y bloggers tend to stray from any trends, which is silly to me because these bomber jackets are SO comfortable and practical for between seasons weather (and frankly, Members Only IS a vintage brand)!  I tied this whole look together with using the Members Only Satin Washed Boyfriend Jacket in burgundy with these platform heels from Amazon by Dadawen.  I feel the burgundy bookends bounce off the greens and blues nicely.

How's everyone's week been?  Thanks for allowing me to take a week off!  Not only did I have obligations at the Comedy Central Stage and the Upright Citizen's Brigade stage this week, but I was hosting one of my very best friends who came to visit me!  …
