Cannonball

Monday Announcements:

  • So sorry I've STILL been slow at blogging and everything related.  I've somewhat recently realized I'm terrible at shifting mental gears when I have a lot going on, and this time around blogging is taking the biggest hit.  That said, this should be ending as my other blogging issue, serious wind when I meant to take outfit photos, has subsided some and I have a pseudo surplus of outfit posts etc built up.  I think (::knock on wood::) I'm about to get back on track this week.
  • If you missed last week, my comedy project Just Shair! is launching THIS Sunday!  (If you missed last week's announcement on it and what it is, read HERE to catch up!)  We have social media setup if you want up to the minute intel on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • You cannot tell in this outfit post as the skirt goes below my knees, but I'm starting to acquire a collection of bruises around my knees and thighs.  This may be a new staple as I'm signed up for Krav Maga for the next few months.  I LOVE it so far, but since I bruise easily I can't imagine this will be changing while I do this.  And since I keep things real and don't photoshop out flaws, this will likely be a staple for future posts with shorter dresses and skirts.  So, you've been warned and I promise I'm fine ;)

Behind the outfit: I LOVE this bowling skirt!  I got it on Black Friday from Jumblelaya on Etsy.  My only complaint about Black Friday is that it basically falls when winter starts around here, so many pieces don't get worn, or at least photographed, until later on.  This amazing skirt fell victim to this phenomenon.  But given the yellows and pinks, I think it's going to get a lot of wear for the next several months!

Style details: As I mentioned, the skirt is from Jumblelaya.  I actually have a few skirts from this store, as I believe they carry some of the best novelty vintage skirts in the game.  The glasses are from Charming Charlie, the shirt is Urban Outfitters (I really love mixing prints...), the brooch is Deer Arrow, and the shoes are Guess from Marshalls.

Motivational time:  I think good friendships can take a long time to build.  Yes, you can bond with someone within seconds, but their true character can only be tested over a long period of time.  I think in this ever increasingly fast world, we can forget this.  I know I have!  I currently feel lucky to have stuck it out with people I didn't necessarily have an instant bond with as they've proven to be some of the most solid friends someone can ask for.  I'm trying to remember that having a laundry list of things in common isn't as important as having a list of values in common...and that can only manifest and be proven after some time.  Thought I'd share ;)

Music time!  Guys...I get to talk about Kim Deal!!!  She's one of my rock IDOLS!  Both of my favorite female rockers are named Kim (Gordon being the other one).  But this is the first time I'm talking about anything in this Kim's universe.  For those who don't know, Kim Deal was in The Pixies and then broke away and formed The Breeders with her twin sister Kelley.  The latter band is a little underrated, but they are a 90s gem.  Since there's a bowling ball in this skirt, I decided it wasn't a stretch to name this song "Cannonball" after The Breeders most famous hit.  I was a little young and still in my parent's Motown cocoon when this came out, but as I began to grasp contemporary music a few years later and eventually heard it I knew this was the epitome of some flavor of what it meant to rock in the 90s.  I'm fairly certain time has proven me correct on it.  Don't recognize the name The Breeders?  Click the video below and you'll know what I'm talking about.  Trust me.

PS- One of my all-time favorite lines from Gilmore Girls is when Lane Kim is freaking out that someone who responded to her band wanted ad didn't know that Kim Deal was in the Pixies before The Breeders.

I've recently added two pages to this blog, one that catalogues posts named after songs and another that catalogues all of the concert stories.  Click the links on to see for yourself!  Happy Friday!

  4. YES, stripes are the best! I seriously adore this skirt -- glad you're finally getting a chance to bust it out! I always have bruises all over my legs, but unfortunately, it's just because I'm a ridiculously klutzy person. And I totally feel you on shared values being more important than shared interests! It's almost more fun when you can watch your friends get super excited about things that are new to you, and expand your horizons together through the foundation of shared values!

I am so excited for your comedy project to hit the internet!!

  21. Common interests are great in friendships or romantic relationships but shared values are really the base of everything and what holds us together in the end.

  24. I know you describe yourself as a vintage fashion blogger but your style is such a beautiful fusion between modern and old. I know I've told you that before and I'll tell you again for a million times, it's something that is uniquely 'YOU' and that is why you're one of my favourite fashion bloggers. xx
