Socially Awkward Penguin

Monday Tuesday Announcements:  None this week, except apologies for being slow with blogging, all things social media, and being reciprocal with other bloggers!  I'm back at it, but sometimes after a hiatus it takes me a second to get my sea legs back!

About the dress: Oh my goodness friends, I'm in love with this dress!  It's from Retrolicious and was sold at ModCloth (it sold out during their super sale earlier this, by others and myself) but can be found at current retail price on the Folter/Retrolicious site HERE.  This is the first of two dresses that I'll be showcasing over the next month that I'm in the minority with, as so many women read this dress as a "holiday" dress.  It has polar bears and penguins on it, and since it's winter-y I'm sure it would make a good holiday dress.  But I saw it as a straight up winter dress with the polar print.  And, with the pinks and whites and the print being kind of subtle, I think it would be easy to wear in the summer without being too eccentric!

I need to do a second on the fit...as it's possibly one of my favorite Retrolicious fits.  I think I own another dress like it, and it's just so flattering and comfortable!  Though this is a vintage reproduction dress, it's on the shorter side so it doesn't feel as vintage as other dresses and I think it can pass for a modern dress (depending on styling).  But I was watching Mad Men or something that had 60s fashion in it recently and I recognized the asymmetrical line above the breasts with buttons and got excited to mentally piece another clothing item from my closet in an appropriate and historical context.

Style details: The head scarf is from Forever 21, the cardigan is Old Navy, again the dress is Retrolicious, the penguin brooch (that matches perfectly!!!) is Erstwilder, and the shoes are Nine West!

Motivational:  It's almost March!!!  I said this in the beginning of February, but I think it's time to say it again: it's not too late to make this year be the kind of year you want it to be.  So many New Year's resolutions fall by the wayside within the first few weeks, when in reality 52 weeks is a long time.  I won't say this EVERY month, but reality is that right now you can totally still get on track with any goals that are specific to this 2016 year.

Music time!  I was actually stumped for a moment trying to figure out what song to name this post after and I punched into Spotify "penguin" and a Bloodhound Gang song came up called "Socially Awkward Penguin."  The title made me laugh and because I remembered loving the band in high school, I clicked on it.  The song is from their most recent album, which was in 2015.  I 100% lost track of the Bloodhound Gang and had no clue they were still making music!  I gave some of their other songs a listen and I dig the new album (Hard Off) so far!  This album reminds me more of Blink 182 (but sillier) then I remembered them sounding like.  As a (reformed) music snob and punk lover, I spent a good portion of my life pretending to hate Blink 182, but I'm too old and exhausted for that sh*t so let the record state that I actually kind of like Blink 182.  This means that the Bloodhound Gang reminding me of them on their latest album is a technical compliment, haha.  Here's the silly song if you want to listen:

I've recently added two pages to this blog, one that catalogues posts named after songs and another that catalogues all of the concert stories.  Click the links on to see for yourself!  Happy Friday!

  2. I love the cut of this dress! It looks great on you! I can see why people would feel this to be a holiday dress but I can see it being a full on winter dress as well! I really love the penguin brooch you paired with it. Too perfect together! And yes! I am still going strong with sticking to my new years resolution guns. And by sticking to I mean reassessing and tweeking to make it more reasonable. After all, I think it's better to reevaluate rather than kick yourself over it and you can still be happy with what you can and do do :)

  3. You look seriously cute in this polar bear and penguin print. The fit is perfect on you! Love your hot pink accents as well. Eccentric dresses are fun dresses in my opinion and always make me smile. I love animal prints, especially cat prints. Thanks for the motivation to keep me on track:)

  4. Love the fit of the dress on you! I love it when they have a good defined waist and softly flow out from there. Fun print too, and I like your red with it. I cannot believe it is almost March...

  5. This is such a cute dress and I agree that I look at it as more of a winter dress than just for the holidays. You look beautiful with all of the pink accents. Totally perfect!

  6. This look is amazing! I love the hot pink cardigan over the more muted pinks of the dress, and the seam over the bust with the buttons is such a great touch! You're totally selling me on having more Retrolicious in my life.

Haven't thought of the Bloodhound Gang in years! The turning point in my 'I'm above popular music' phase was actually when Justin Timberlake came out with his second album. My college roommate was super into it, and totally won me over to unabashed dance parties all over our house!
