Happy 2016! So far this year my friends and myself are in ridiculous form (typical) and after some not even slightly serious toasts at a brunch on New Year's day we've cancelled 2016 and are calling this year 2006, because why not call it 2006? We're considering renaming each year a new year on New Year's day because life is somewhat more fun when you're inaccurate on purpose. (Seriously, try it! I'm hoping we pick a 19th century year next year.) Plus you get to reference stuff based on what you know already happened, a la saying stuff like, "I hear sexy is coming back this year. I can't wait!" And, "I bet Lindsey Lohan will never be a train wreck. She's the child star that'll break the curse!" Needless to say, this year has brought a lot of laughs and it's only three days in! On a MORE serious note, I have some announcements and thoughts after the next photo jump that are worth reading, as there are some changes coming this blog's way in
About this dress: I remember vividly when this Bernie Dexter dress dropped on ModCloth two years ago. My eyes bugged out of my sockets and I knew it was basically a dream dress that I had always wanted, but yet never knew existed. It eventually went on super sales (it got terrible reviews, which is weird because it fits just like any other Bernie in the Paris cut style) so between that factor and some store credit, this dress became mine within mere months. I'm not a huge drinker, but when I do indulge I'm partial to champagne. I think it started out as a joke, because champagne feels so fancy and I would drink it with friends and keep calling it "cham-paag-nah" to be silly. But then after too many mimosa brunches and such, I realized that I don't just ironically like champagne. The joke was on me! So this dress is also appropriate too, I suppose.
It's also a perfect New Year's dress! Speaking of, how was everyone's NYE???? This dress was one of the dresses I wore to last NYE (yes, dresses. One for the day--this one-- and one for the evening, plus a New Year's Day dress. I'm clearly a diva. OR a future Emmy's host...one or the other!) Though I love this dress, I don't wear it as much as I'd like. It feels fancier than most of my vintage repo dresses. I guess champagne has that effect. And because it's black, it feels like a night time attire. I remember wearing it to a happy hour around the summer solstice (read: it was still daylight) and I was feeling mega over dressed on this patio of a brewery in a BFE suburb of Denver. I'm always a smidge over dressed, but this felt different. Anyhoo, I've been itching to wear it so I figured why not style it for my new year, new thoughts, and new directions for this blog post!!! Scroll down for details on where myself and this blog is heading...
I'm going to open with the hardest news: I haven't been super happy blogging this past year. Don't misunderstand as I've had happy moments and I'm happy with you guys. And I'm NOT quitting blogging. But over the summer I started to identify that my motivation was dragging, and that hit a peak by mid-fall. I love clothes, but only focusing on clothes has started to--pun intended--wear on me. I originally began style blogging to round out my online persona, but boy is life ever when you're busy making other plans!! There's one project that I've had since 2011 that in late 2015 I officially decided to let go (gasp!) but frankly that never made sense to overlap with this blog, so that's kind of a moot point. But it was an intellectual project, and that's worth noting because I hate it when girls who use their brains get called plain, or anything that's essentially non-feminine adjacent. Think about it: how many female politicians or writers can you name that are stylishly fun? There's a few, but they are fewer and further inbetween than I'd like to see, so me starting a fashion blog was essentially me being the change I wanted to see in the world. We'll come back to this topic in a moment...
In the comedy world, women also seem to either not seek out fun clothes or their jobs don't allow them to, depending on the case. I'm seeing bolder choices by funny ladies on the red carpet, so luckily that's starting to change, but as a society we still compartmentalize women. Which brings me to my next point: this past year I've been hinting for a while about some comedy stuff that I've been developing too. The project I was hinting at was effectively a prank show (though there was more to it) and after losing a partner an attempt to revamp it was happening, but for the time being that has stalled. It's fate is very unclear and I've emotionally detached myself from it for the time being and whatever happens will be. (That was an easier said than done process, as that was effectively my baby in 2015. Ugh.) The good news is that there is another project in the works, that as luck would have it started to get developed right before the first project fell apart. I'm super afraid about jinxing anything after what happened the last time, but this project would rhyme with smodcast. And me and a super awesome and hilarious girl melded our names to sound like an infamous one name singer as our official comedic duo name. And sometime in that season between winter and summer seems like a realistic launch date. But ugh....KNOCK ON WOOD! As solidified updates come about, I'll see to it that you, my awesome blog audience, will be the first to know.
There are potentially more intellectual pursuits coming my way in 2016, but that's going to depend on time and if I effectively get hired to do some of the things I'm gunning for. And with the "smodcast", hopefully there's a comedic future, if not in other manifestations as well (there may or may not be a wider net that I'm casting...we'll see). I'm going to make something happen, because I have tunnel vision with where I want my life to be going, but in the mean time I'm going to round out some of this stuff on the blog. I have a weekly segment coming up on books, because I believe most fashionistas I've come across are really smart so why not talk about learning? I'll have a fashion twist to it, because I actually still do want to do the fashion thing, but also because I don't want to alienate my audience (I get that it's annoying when you read a fashion blog and you come across a non-fashion post). I'm also toying with the idea of adding a video feature that would be kind of silly, but I'm working out the kinks about if that's even a good idea or how that would work entirely. Regardless, independent projects from this blog will be advertised on here.
To wrap this up in a bow, while I love blogging, I feel as though I've watered down my personality a bit on this blog. I've always been authentic with what I've shown you and how I've interacted with fellow bloggers, but it's been a fraction of what I'm really about and I can't marginalize myself anymore. I started this blog to round out an online media persona brand, and somewhere along the way that got off course. Most days you won't detect any changes on here, as this will primarily be a fashion blog with normal fashion blog posts. (And in all fairness, with adding music portions to this blog last year some of the changes already commenced). But some new segments are coming and other off blog things will be advertised. I want to be myself on this blog, and not just a well dressed and only well dressed version of myself. I'm aiming for part fashion blog as is and part lifestyle of a fashionable lady blog....who is also absurd, sassy, and opinionated at times. Let's have fun, let's learn together, and let's all be our best selves in this already wonderful new year. XOXO
PS- New url is coming.... ;)
Style details: Back to the fashion part...as I mentioned this dress is Bernie Dexter and I originally got it from ModCloth. (So sad that Bernie and ModCloth parted ways!) The headband is Forever 21, the Barbie brooch is from Poison of Choice, as almost always the handbag is Kate Spade, the cardigan is from Target, and the shoes are Guess via Marshalls.
Music portion: Originally I was looking for a cool remake of "Auld Lang Syne" for this blog post (my favorites from my research were from The Beach Boys and Reel Big Fish...FYI) but then that little part of my brain with the 90s burned into my brain turned on and went, "Duh! Do "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis for this post!") I may very well do another New Year's post next year and can do "Auld Lang Syne" but I very well may not have champagne bottles on my dress to commemorate a new year. Happy 2016! I sincerely hope this year brings happiness, health, and success because I couldn't wish the opposite on my worst enemies, let alone my readers and fellow bloggers!
