Sour Times

I love vintage clothing so much.  I used to have a weekly series called "Sunday Vintage" where I'd showcase a vintage item like this but I've decided to not limit myself to only talking about certain things or pieces of clothing on specific days.  But this dress is seriously one of the best vintage finds ever.  I found it this winter at my local Buffalo Exchange for a fraction of the price that I would have found it in a specialty vintage store or online (like, $30).  I love how there's such soft colors in the pastels but the color blocking makes it bolder than your average pastel dress.

Some ladies go all out with their vintage threads, pairing their duds with brooches, old time-y shoes, and full on vintage hair.  It's fun; I do that sometimes as well.  (Less so with the hair since I've grown out my bangs and swooping what's left of them back up in a bun is not a fun task...I miss easy to do beehives!)  But I feel like so many vintage pieces stand alone that they don't need much to showcase a fun outfit full of character.  This is one of those dresses for me.  I photographed it once while on vacation with a head scarf on, and this Indian Summer I've been content to wear this with strappy heeled sandals (G by Guess) and walk out the door.  Simple...yet bold.

Positivity and motivational time!  Never judge what you don't understand.  If someone's dream seems weird, or the way someone dresses seems off, or even someone's attitude is something that rubs you the wrong way, it's okay to not gravitate towards them, but don't judge.  People always have reasons for the choices that they make.  If you're coming from a relatable perspective, it's one thing to agree or disagree.  But if you don't know about the topic or know someone's life story, withhold judgment.  Do you like being cut off at the knees because someone says something to you that in their field of vision is a "trump card" but they are misunderstanding your whole world or point?  If so, practice compassion before judgement or jumping to conclusions about someone else's decisions so you never cut them off at the knees.  No matter how intelligent we are and no matter how many experiences we amass, there's always pieces of the puzzle that we're going to be missing.

This was a hard blog post to name after a song title, in part because there were a few to choose from.  Colors are often in the name of songs, as are rainbows, so I wasn't sure which direction to go in!  Finally I landed on a Portishead song, "Sour Times."  I chose it because the color hues remind me of how sour candy is packaged, and some of the flavors and candy they use for said candies.  Nothing about this ensemble is "sour", but for color naming purposes I think it works!!

  17. I love Portishead! And I love your dress now! You always have the most amazing dresses! Yes, this one is colorful and not sour! I loved it with the shoes! And you look beautiful and above all, I loved what you said about not judging. I hate judging. True, I have for some time a "friend" who is so superficial and in fact I know she is that way, but I guess this is just the fear of growing up. After some time, I did like you said, tried to get distance, because it was unbearable to hear what she said about me or other things and she couldn't accept my way, as I don't like hers. Still, I don't dislike her totally, so the best was to get some distance. Brilliant post! I started getting better today, but still have to avoid some foods :)

Add to that.. those even happier and gorgeous strappy high heels.. and I have forgotten that it's only Monday.. and that there are still 4 days to go the weekend! :-P

  23. You look amazing here!!! I love this bright and sunny 50's vintage dress. I love sunny yellow dresses like these, but they are rare pieces to find. Everyone has down days and times in their life where they need a pick me up from a pep talk or a positive friend to cheer them up. Also, people who have different perspectives from our own I feel provides a learning opportunity to understand their point of view, even if we disagree. Thanks for sharing this. Nice post.
