Little Bird

It's starting to become a lot more like fall here (see the trees in this photoset...which PS happened somewhat overnight!) but I'm still pushing for as summery ensembles as I can get away with!  In fact, some posts coming up are going to be about autumn proofing and winterizing your best summer looks, haha.  What can I say?  The first time that I moved away from home (Pennsylvania) I moved to Miami, Florida because I enjoy hot weather.

This is one of my favorite skirts, which may be surprising to some as I have a bit of a rep of being a novelty print skirt queen.  But I absolutely love this ModCloth skirt (no longer available) to pieces.  Green is one of my favorite colors and I almost consider this skirt my equivalent of a favorite pair of jeans; it's comfy and it practically goes with everything.  I decided to pair it with this awesome bird printed Sunny Girl top (which recently sold out, but if someone returns it you can watch it on this link) to keep things seasonal neutral.  The green works as an autumnal color, but the mint backdrop of the shirt can really be summer, spring, or even winter.  One of my favorite things about clothing, and half of the reason I wanted to start blogging, is that I have a passion for matching colors.  Few things make me as happy as when I find a pair of shoes that match a weird color in a dress, haha.  So it was an obvious choice to round out the outfit with my mint Guess shoes and Kate Spade bag.  The sunglasses are almost the kind of shade you would expect it the green from my skirt and the mint from the other pieces were to make a baby, so I felt like they worked (brand unknown).
In regards to the positivity portion of this outfit post, I have some advice.  The people that act with compassion, empathy, and loyalty are not only the people that you can trust but are typically the people that need it the most.  They're acting out more of what they wish they had and are walking embodiments of being the change that they wish to see in the world.  The people that preach about what great friends or romantic partners they are, or the people that are always talking about how kind, sweet, and caring they are...they are rarely those things.  Whether they're sociopaths trying to trap you, or people with a blatant insecurity who lack the tools to fix their flaws, they're projecting an image of themselves they want you to see that may not actually exist.  I learned this at a young age, and with each passing year I find this advice to be basically all-around true with limited exceptions to the rule.  Word to the wise when you bond with new people, or are making decisions about who to keep in your life!
This outfit post is named after an Annie Lennox song.  I'm so stupid into indie, punk, and metal that I often cite rap as being my "which one is not like the other" left turn of favorite genres or specific artists.  But maybe Annie Lennox is actually the name that I could drop that seems out of my usual wheelhouse the most.  Regardless, I just find her to be completely mesmerizing.  There's something very goddess-like about her to me, she's unbelievably talented, and everything about her is classic and never goes out of style.  Read: I'm a huge fan.  My friends turned me onto this song in college (I believe Demi Moore dances around her room to it in Strip Tease, which is how my friends thought to find it online somewhere and download it.  We got on this kick about comparing Strip Tease to Showgirls...the latter totally wins, PS ;-p) and I've never gotten this song out of my head since.  Obviously this song needed to be a blog post about one of my several pieces of clothing with a bird on it.  Also, I added a new page on my blog that logs all of the outfits posts that I've named after songs.  Click HERE to keep track or refresh your memory ;)

  1. Gorgeous Lauren! Im loving all of these green tones, especially the mints! Haha, you're so right about the sunnies being a combined "baby" color. Your advice is spot on too. I know people that like to talk a out what a great...blah blah...they are and I always thought how un true that is.

  4. I saw this outfit in ModCloth's Style Gallery yesterday and fell head over heels in love! I can see why that's your favorite skirt - it's beautiful! The top you paired it with looks fantastic too. And could the background for these photos be any prettier?! Fantastic advice as well...I couldn't agree with it more.

Hope you're having a fabulous week, Lauren!

  8. I just love coming to your blog, do you know why? You are so beautiful and stylish (seriously love the green with your red hair btw), but you are also very deep and intuitive. I can tell when I read your content. The truth about people who are the nicest, and most empathetic being the ones that need it most? You are so point. The ones always boasting about themselves and how great they are - they are almost never anything near what they claim to be. Funny thing about humans isn't that? You have such a good head on your shoulders and I love hearing your opinion on things. Keep it up please! PS: I am so happy we are now following each other on insta :)
