She's a Lady

Greetings, clothing lovers.  How was everyone's weekend?  My was nice, thank you for asking!  NOW I feel like summer is o-v-e-r.  I went to the last home Rockies game of the 2015 season, which means it's fall.  I only went to two games this year, due to weather etc, but baseball winding down does mean summer is basically over too.  Denver usually has Indian Summer throughout September and sometimes into October, so my radar with seasons changing here is different than when I lived in PA.  Baseball ending is a sign I can measure though.

I used to do a series called "A Case of the (Motivational) Mondays" starting from last August and it went off and on through this spring.  I stopped doing these for a number of reasons.  They were wordy posts, which is fine, but also time consuming.  I was also trying to get my head straight about certain things and writing a motivational post felt weird.  I truly believe that a fashion/style/beauty  blog isn't what it should be if it is not tackling inner issues as well.  My mantra with clothes is that I dress to live life to the fullest and in hopes of having the life I went.  It's not for strictly aesthetics nor is it EVER for competition or attention.  I want to bring this motivational segment back, but I'm not sure I want to commit a post to it once a week or strictly on Mondays.  I'm going to be testing out writing something motivational or a lesson I learned the hard way intertwined with various fashion posts.  Forgive me if the trial and error is awkward, as I am trying something new.  And please leave feedback.  If you like reading fashion and motivational posts separately OR together, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I suppose in this inaugural way of doing things, I should talk about clothes as motivational device.  I've always meant to address this more in my blog, as it's part of the reason why I started blogging.  There's that expression, "dress for the job that you want and not the one you have."  I've never understood why that has to be a strictly corporate thing.  Life isn't worth living to me unless I'm striving for something.  My dream of dreams is to do something larger than myself.  Clothes are a way of keeping things classy, fun, hopeful, and youthful all at once.  Loving what you wear is just one more way of having fun with your day.  Taking pride in yourself and your appearance doesn't have to be vain, as much as it can be a step in the right direction towards learning to love yourself.  So little is in our control in life, more than we truly acknowledge because it's downright scary how little control we have.  Why not have one more thing to love and take pride in, even if it's as "frivolous" as clothing?  To an extent, it's a choice to have fun and be happy.  Or at least, we all eventually have to make that decision even after the most warranted dark periods.  If people get style ideas from me, then awesome.  But if people choose to take pride in themselves and have fun with benign parts of their day because they see me doing so, that means a helluva a lot more.  Clothing and dressing choices should always be about an inside out approach, and never the reverse.  At least that's my humble opinion!
This dress is by my favorite dress designer, Bernie Dexter.  Her dresses are the epitome of why I became interested in vintage reproduction: they're classic and retro but are super fun because she has the most colorful and amazing prints.  Part of why I love this dress is that it's so lady-like, and in a way reminds me of my idol, Grace Kelly.  I'm not even sure why because I can't think of a dress she wore like it, but the essence of it screams Grace Kelly.  Do you guys ever buy a dress or a piece of clothing because it reminds you of a famous person or character?!

Black is usually an obvious choice to pair with this dress, or white, but I decided to go with one of my favorite colors that's also prominently featured in this pattern, powder blue (by Nine West).  For some shots, I wore a light blue H&M cardigan and sunglasses from Charming Charlie.  But the sun was setting so I had to take the glasses off, haha.  Eventually I just opted to get rid of the cardigan too (I wasn't liking how it was photographing), but here's a few shots with it on:
The name of this post is after a song, and that song is "She's a Lady" by Pulp.  Pulp is one of my all-time favorite bands, and one of the reasons is the poetry in the lyrics are always so interesting, detailed, and unexpected.  The song itself maybe doesn't represent what this dress is about, but when you're naming blog posts after song titles you can't be too picky about the title and lyrical content matching your clothes, haha.  But because this dress is so ladylike, and reminds me of one of most famous ladies of all-time, this post had to be called "She's a Lady."

  3. You're such a beauty Lauren! I definitely wear pieces of clothing or accessories because they remind me of someone and usually Grace Kelly is it! Haha. I'm so glad to know someone else who loves her. Also, love your inspirational part of the post, especially "Life isn't worth living to me unless I'm striving for something." Could not agree more.

    1. That's so sweet of you to say! Anytime I mention Grace Kelly I hope that you catch it bc I know you're a die hard fan too, haha! Thanks!

  4. So stunning, you look amazing! You have such a great collection of Bernie dresses! x

  5. I like motivational posts, and right now I need some, in fact :) I totally agree with you that clothes are for other things, other than competing and attention. Unfortunately, I know people who live for that - competing through clothes, only clothes, shoes and coffee with friends - to belittle them - are important. Very sad, but I don't judge, it would be sad for me, if they like it, fine. I loved Pulp, I didn't know them! I am listening to them while I write! The dress looks great, I love it, and the shoes too! I think you always look so beautiful and feminine!

    1. Aw, hope you're doing ok! Glad I turned you on to Pulp! And I'm glad to know another like minded and nonjudgmental lady, even if it's only on the Internet! XO

  6. the colors of that dress are so beautiful and the shoes are matching perfect :)

  7. I seriously can't wait to read your motivational posts Lauren! The thing I love about that stuff is we all have different life experiences, view points and ways of writing that we can all learn from and appreciate! I totally agree with you with that the way you dress yourself is not so much about vanity but about loving yourself, I've had people say to me "oh it's just a cover up for who you really are" and I'm like nope you don't get it, it's quiet the opposite lol! It's important to be you and dress however you truly want and value and express that to the fullest. Dare I say you look might damn fine! ;)

    1. Yay, I'm glad you of all people approve!! Thanks so much, doll!

  8. "Loving what you wear is just one more way of having fun with your day. Taking pride in yourself and your appearance doesn't have to be vain, as much as it can be a step in the right direction towards learning to love yourself." Lauren, you are such a wonderfully wise soul. I couldn't agree more with the sentiment of this post.

And your sunset photos are out of this world! SO beautiful! :)

  10. Very beautiful my friend. I love your words and the message you have to say. That life isn't worthing living unless you are trying to do something incredible, or that you should always be dressing for the job you want, not the job you have. Two big important things to me! You are on the right "track" (pun intended ;)

  11. You look so elegant!

  13. I agree fashion should come from the inside out and you are right we have little control and fashion is something we do have control over! Fashion should be fun!

Hey, all!  I'm a big baseball fan and my mom is from Chicago so I grew up hearing about the Cubs history and am pretty amped to be here at game 7!  Anyone else into this year's World Series or have a fan favorite they're rooting for?
Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post showing my fandom!  I decided to be silly and wear my Cubs tee with a skirt (same as my zombie skirt) from Retrolicious via ModCloth with bears all over them...get it?  Hehe. I'm not into totally normal sports attire, as I exhibited HERE. Stay safe tonight if you're out watching tonight!

Ocean Front Members Only

Is this a style post only I could bring you or what?  Not only did I mix prints (three times, as the Forever 21 shirt is gingham, the ModCloth briefcase is dinosaur printed, and my true vintage skirt is an ocean front border print!) but I'm mixing vintage with modern fashion.  It seems that many vintage-y bloggers tend to stray from any trends, which is silly to me because these bomber jackets are SO comfortable and practical for between seasons weather (and frankly, Members Only IS a vintage brand)!  I tied this whole look together with using the Members Only Satin Washed Boyfriend Jacket in burgundy with these platform heels from Amazon by Dadawen.  I feel the burgundy bookends bounce off the greens and blues nicely.

How's everyone's week been?  Thanks for allowing me to take a week off!  Not only did I have obligations at the Comedy Central Stage and the Upright Citizen's Brigade stage this week, but I was hosting one of my very best friends who came to visit me!  …
