Music, Fashion, and Jurassic 5

I believe I was in high school when I first heard Jurassic 5.  And other than stealing my brother's Dr. Dre albums on occasion, I was staunchly a rock and roll type girl.  But then J5's "The Influence" came on the airways and I was like whoa.  As I mentioned here, I think part of why I like hip hop and some rap so much is that it somewhat reminds me of old Motown hits; catchy beats and clever poetry in lyrics.  I can't think of a better hip hop song that is the epitome of what I just stated over "The Influence."  When I had the chance to see Jurassic 5 earlier this summer, I was super excited.  I had heard nothing but good things about their live show and given that they're one of the more popular bands I enjoy, I was able to have an almost record breaking 5(!) friends with me in tow.
First, the fashion!  When I featured this Retrolicious dress in this blog post, I asked y'all if you had any guesses as to which concert I would wear this dress to as it would be kind of 'theme-y"!  Becca from Super Style Me guessed it right (though she admitted to cheating a bit haha), but hooray anyway!  Get it?  Jurassic 5?  Jurassic dress? Oh, how I amuse myself in life!  And naturally I always seem to have to pose like a T-Rex when I take outfit photos in this dress:
I picked my tan Jessica Simpson ballet flats to go with the outfit and the Target brown shoulder bag (both that I also wore to Marilyn Manson/Smashing Pumpkins, making them very widely used and appropriate concert going accessories!).  If you're paying attention, this is also the 4th time in a row I wore a Retrolicious/Folter dress to a concert this summer!  The other dresses (and shows) can be found, here, here, and here!

Six of us total were going and somehow we were all mostly in unison that we should go early to stake out a good area and check out the opener.  This was surprising because a majority of us run late to everything and regardless we are so hit or miss when it comes to checking out openers.  I should know better as some bands that I love I discovered through opening acts, a la Janelle Monae opening for MGMT, Total Ghost opening for Magic Cyclops, the Whigs opening for Kings of Leon, and most recently Baby in Vain opening for The Kills (you'll be reading about that show in a few weeks!).  Sometimes time is an issue and sometimes opening bands suck, so sometimes it's either not meant to be or isn't worth it.  But boy oh boy, am I stoked that we made this opening act!  A local act, SF1 opened for Jurassic 5 and we were all blown away.  They were hip hop but with tap dancing and African drums, as well as all kinds of other elements.  I liked them from the get go but the second they did a cover of Outkast's "B.O.B." my jaw hit the floor (that's a FAST song and they covered it PERFECTLY)!  My friend Jeanice put it best (being the one in our gang who likes hip hop and rap the least), "If all rap was like this, I'd love rap."  I actually love rap a lot and I've seen a lot of the greats, but this was like nothing I had ever seen.  When I realized that they were local and were playing a music festival a week or so later I made a point to see them and I hope to see them again in the near future.  (Spoiler alert: more on them in a week or two!)
My camera could barely keep up with the dancing.
Unfortunately our friend Matt got stuck at work way late on a Friday and came halfway through Jurassic 5.  He missed all of our photo-opps sadly.  But here are some group photos from five of us hanging at the show:
My friend Kelsey and I have now seen 5 national hip hop/rap concerts together!!
So...Jurassic 5 is absolutely as amazing as everyone says they are.  I get why people love them through and through and boast about their live shows.  I was a little bit surprised at how it took me a minute to recognize the individual voices in concert, as some of the vocalists are super distinct, but that may not be their fault.  If you remember me saying this from other posts or on Instagram, I was fighting getting sick that week.  This was my third show of the week and I feel like I had another huge event that week as well that I now can't remember for the life of me.  I even had a wedding to go to the next day, so I was both a little burned out and trying to conserve energy at once.  Maybe I was a little bit out of it and therefore was slow with identifying the members of Jurassic 5.

Sadly, I got a little bit overheated during the show.  (Probably because I was sick and this was mid-July on a really hot night).  I started having flashbacks to when I saw TV on the Radio four years ago, at this exact venue, and I was anemic and didn't know it yet.  I overheated at that show and barely made it to the walkways on the side of the Ogden Theater before collapsing.  I'm not a fan of repeating bad episodes, so knowing my friend Jeanice was dying of heat too, I turned to her and said I was going to go to the lobby to get some air, and as I suspected she was willing to join.  We stayed there for the rest of the show, which is kind of a bummer but hey, we could hear the show from the lobby and I had heard a solid majority of the songs I wanted to hear before exiting the auditorium.  You can't win them all.  My goal for the summer was to be healthy and not miss out on life because I missed so much over the past two years.  Getting a partial concert experience for half of a show wasn't the end of the world.  And, spoiler alert...I made it through summer without a major illness relapses, hospital visits, or having any huge events ruined!  Yay!  #goalreached
By now you all know that I love to relay information on what the crowd was like at shows.  Honestly, there wasn't too many things of note to report on!  The only thing I truly have to say is that watching white people dance to hip hop music, while stoned, is kind of hilarious.  I'll leave the rest up to your imagination!

  1. You do have a thing for dinosaurs don't you?!?! ;) Of course you look bloody amazing though! I'm always fascinated with how Eminem puts his raps and lyrics together, I was watching an interview with him and Anderson Cooper and he was talking about it and I was like wooahh that is cool. Some rap lyrics I'm not a huge fan of but it's always cool when artists have done it really cleverly.

    1. Haha, they are cool!! Although it was too easy with seeing Jurassic 5 to not wear this dress to them. Yeah, rap artists really are artists whether it's your genre or not. XOXO

  2. Lovely post looks like you had a great time.

Hey, all!  I'm a big baseball fan and my mom is from Chicago so I grew up hearing about the Cubs history and am pretty amped to be here at game 7!  Anyone else into this year's World Series or have a fan favorite they're rooting for?
Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick post showing my fandom!  I decided to be silly and wear my Cubs tee with a skirt (same as my zombie skirt) from Retrolicious via ModCloth with bears all over them...get it?  Hehe. I'm not into totally normal sports attire, as I exhibited HERE. Stay safe tonight if you're out watching tonight!

Ocean Front Members Only

Is this a style post only I could bring you or what?  Not only did I mix prints (three times, as the Forever 21 shirt is gingham, the ModCloth briefcase is dinosaur printed, and my true vintage skirt is an ocean front border print!) but I'm mixing vintage with modern fashion.  It seems that many vintage-y bloggers tend to stray from any trends, which is silly to me because these bomber jackets are SO comfortable and practical for between seasons weather (and frankly, Members Only IS a vintage brand)!  I tied this whole look together with using the Members Only Satin Washed Boyfriend Jacket in burgundy with these platform heels from Amazon by Dadawen.  I feel the burgundy bookends bounce off the greens and blues nicely.

How's everyone's week been?  Thanks for allowing me to take a week off!  Not only did I have obligations at the Comedy Central Stage and the Upright Citizen's Brigade stage this week, but I was hosting one of my very best friends who came to visit me!  …
