Music, Fashion and Fitz and the Tantrums

Flashback to going to the 1940s Ball with my friend Katie.  We're in this ridiculously long line to park and while listening to rap music (as you do en route to a World War II era party) I started telling her how stoked I was to have all of these concerts lined up for the summer, rap music and otherwise.  She says that she's seeing Fitz and the Tantrums the following week.  I stop and blink several times and say, "What?  Where are they playing?!" I was completely baffled because I had searched high and low every concert schedule at every venue in town and I certainly had not seen Fitz and the Tantrums anywhere.  I had wanted to see them a few times in the past but my schedule and/or health had never allowed it. Katie informed me that her husbands work was hosting a private party and they were playing there.  Obviously I asked if they could get me in!  She asked her husband who asked a coworker to make me their plus one and voila!  I got to see Fitz and the Tantrums and prove that dreams do come true!
As always, let's talk fashion and style first.  Now, I have to preface all of this with a confession: I have never been in the corporate world.  I've worked places that had some kind of a dress code, a la restaurants or retail, and I've taught music to kids with learning disabilities at a private school once a week where I was told to look "respectable" but alas, I've never had a cubicle, joined an office basketball bracket thingee, or gone to too many work related parties.  The reason I'm divulging this information is because the second I showed up "uh-oh" and "oh f*ck!" simultaneously went through my head.  You see, I knew this was an outdoor event.  When I think outdoor music events in the summer, when it's 90 degrees out or more...I think borderline "festival" attire, or at least whatever the hell I feel like wearing, hence the crop top.  I mean, it literally didn't even dawn on me that it was a corporate event with families running around and not a straight up rock and roll event.  So friends, remember the audience while dressing!  That said, I didn't get any dirty looks and some girls were wearing backless dresses so phew!  Dress code crisis averted.  But still, learn from my near mistake and review where you're going in your head before you get dressed!

Like I said, it was really hot!  People forget that Colorado has a desert, in addition to the mountains.  The mountains have an entirely different weather system than the rest of the state, people!  It's legit around 100 degrees here in the summer for weeks on end.  And in the winter, though it may snow once a week, we have frequent 70 degree streaks too.  Okay, enough geography and metrology!  It was hot, you get it!  So in although I realized that I was not being super "corporate appropriate' I have no regrets because I was basically sweating the whole time, despite that the sun was preparing to go down.  I got this peacock crop top in the fall when all of the Love Cultures were shutting down and wore it once on an Indian summer day before having it sit in a drawer until now.  I had never thought to pair it with my green ModCloth skirt, but at the last second a light bulb went off in my head while dressing and I decided to try it.  This green skirt is one of my favorite pieces of clothing ever and it's probably the second purchase I made from ModCloth.  It's no longer being sold, but what I love about it is that it's super light weight.  I can be a little bit covered up (especially when trying to pull off a crop top with an ounce of class) while keeping cool too.  My only complaint is that it wrinkles easily, but luckily that didn't show in photos.
Me and my lovely friend, Katie.

I figured because we wouldn't be walking as much and it was going to be picnic-y that my yellow Jessica Simpson summery yellow heels were a safe and easy choice and it's very hard for me not to carry this green Kate Spade bag while wearing this green skirt.  Another reason why I wanted to wear a crop top was knowing that I'd be outside, I wanted to avoid tank and tee tan lines.  Yes, I wear sunscreen but if you're outside enough you get darker regardless.  In the beginning of every season I try this tactic, though I'm excited to be less diligent about it this year as there are no weddings or other events on the horizon that require a very specific dress that wouldn't be as amazing if paired with bizarre tan lines.  So I can bring on the farmer's tan if that's how it goes, though I'm still going not exactly "aim" for that, ha.
I was SUPER curious to not only see Fitz and the Tantrum but see them in a private and corporate setting.  Despite that I had zero basis for comparison, my mind got curious about if they would have a lot of rock and roll energy or not, given the circumstances.  I was fairly certain their musicianship would be spot on as they always struck me as the real deal and have such interesting blues influences, and I'm happy to report that I was correct.  In fact, not only was their sound amazing and energetic but their actual energy as people and performers well beyond exceeded my expectations.  Very few times have I seen members of a band, let alone a band of seven years, look like they're having so much fun on stage as Fitz and the Tantrums seemed to be having.  And again, it was technically speaking a corporate event so now I'm even more curious to see them at a true blue rock venue to see if it's even possible that they loosen up even more!  And by the by...the woman in the band is f*cking gorgeous!  (Noelle Scaggs)  Not that that has anything whatsoever to do with musical talent, but my gawd was I girl crushing!  I had seen her in the "Out of My League" video because it plays at my gym constantly but never really took notice.  Yeah... definitely one of the more beautiful women I had seen in real life!  Her smile was contagious and I just got really good vibes from her when she was talking to us.  (Just rewatched the video...it still doesn't give her real life beauty justice).
Hooray for being able to see Fitz and the Tantrums!  No matter what kind of music you're into I highly recommend seeing them because they just seem to be one of those bands who's talents is bigger than whatever one's musical preferences may be.  My whole group I was with has such a range of musical tastes and we all thought they were pretty awesome!

Trivia: Michael FitzPatrick, the lead singer of Fitz and the Tantrums, is in a serious relationship with Kaylee DeFer, aka "cousin Charlie"/Ivy Dickens from Gossip Girl.  They also have a child together.  Thought you may enjoy this fact, my little fashionista friends!

PS- I'm doing two music and fashion posts a week for the next two weeks to play catch up a little bit after a blogging hiatus last week.  Hope you had a great weekend!
