Greetings! Skater dresses are one of my favorite things to wear in the warmer weather months. Some come in patterns or color blockings, but I especially love the solid color ones because it gives you an opportunity to wear it completely different each time you wear it. Given that most states are still in limbo weather wise, or it's chilly at night, OR that some readers and friends are elsewhere in the world, like Australia where it's technically fall now, I thought I'd style this amazing purple dress I got from Express in varying weather friendly ways. Enjoy!
#1 Pick a Complimentary Color to Accessorize With
The Buffalo Exchange in Denver is like, my favorite brick and mortar store ever. They have tons of used clothes, real vintage (at cheaper prices than usual vintage stores), and some dead stock from recent seasons at stores. I saw these purple, tan, and pink shoes and nearly fell over. For $30 I took home these BRAND NEW killer wedges because people apparently didn't want them at whatever store they were being sold at. I knew I HAD to wear them with my purple skater dress. I decided to accessorize with a pink belt from a ModCloth dress, my H&M pink tinted aviators, and my NicCoCo Creations pink flower that I got from Unique Vintage to tie the whole outfit together. I own some really beautiful dresses and skirts with downright glamorous prints, but I'm a big believer that staying stylish can be really simple like tying an outfit together with a unifying color. It makes everything truly pop and stand out, so I highly recommend dressing up a solid skirt or dress this way!
#2 Patterned Knee Socks with Heels
In real life I wear knee socks a lot. I wear them with shorts and skirts and I often also wear them to the gym with my gym shorts. Somehow they have very rarely made my blog. I blame growing up watching Clueless on this style choice, ha! I bought these socks at DSW and decided that they were perfect to wear for this outfit. Aside from the knee socks, this is a very similar look to the first photo in that I'm tying everything together with a complimentary and unifying color. The knee socks give it an element of fun, edge, and sportiness that is somewhat unexpected with skater dresses. It's also less summery than look #1, making it more versatile for cooler spring/fall days and nights. My hair flower is from Sophisticated Lady Flowers, the belt is from a Forever 21 dress, and the shoes are Ralph Lauren.
#3 Class it up with a Blazer and Heels
Part of why I love skater dresses is because it's a very classic look. Anything classic is easy to make into a classy look, and this is definitely the case with this blazer. (I did a very similar look for A Special Pieces Saturday a few weeks back). This ModCloth blazer has been my best friend this spring for when I need to dress up an outfit a bit or just need something fun to cover up with. Since the dress is so bright and the blazer is attention grabbing, I decided to mostly play up the accessories with some of the softer color hues from the blazer. My Chinese Laundry lavender heels are always a favorite of mine and my yellow and purple NicCoCo Creations flower seemed like an apt choice for this ensemble. The green belt from a Forever 21 dress ties all of the colors together. Washington DC, here I (could) come, haha!
#4 Dress it Up with Sparkles
These Nine West shoes are seriously some of the best shoes I own. First off, they're sparkly, so duh! Second, green and purple are not only my favorite colors but my favorite color scheme so these are basically the most perfect shoes ever in my world! Wearing these shoes with this dress is a must! My mint Target cardigan was chosen because because it's not a perfect match but a complimentary color to the whole outfit. When the green and purple sparkles on the shoes combine, it's almost trying to make this minty color happen. Other ideas to pair a classic solid color with sparkles would be to have a white or black jacket/cardigan, depending on the color scheme. Black would have worked fairly well here for some edge, but I like the mint for spring.
#5 Bohemian It Up with a Head Scarf
This is my favorite look to wear in real life with this dress! I'm not one to repeat an outfit too many times in that I like to pair different shoes and accessories with things each time I wear something, but I have worn this exact outfit numerous times the past two years since I've owned this dress. Red and purple are one of my favorite color combinations and there's something that goes so well with this head scarf I got from Ross and wedges I got from DSW. Adding my heart shaped sunglasses that I got in a beach store in Florida earlier this year has given it a great touch!
